What Is A Booster Dose Of COVID-19 Vaccine? 

The booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine is the third dose or the precautionary dose that will be administered as a measure to increase immunity against new variants of the disease inducing coronavirus.

It is recommended when the immunity from the initial doses starts to wane. Ideally, it will be the third dose of COVID vaccine.

It started being administered in India back from 10th January 2022. Initially, it is being administered to healthcare and frontline workers and people above 60 years of age with co-morbidities


Why Is A Booster Dose Of Vaccine Required?

The booster dose is required:

  • to protect the immunocompromised people who did not respond well to the first two doses,
  • to provide protection to the body after a certain duration when the effect of the vaccines start to wane
  • to trigger the performance of the vaccines against new variants.


What Are the Booster Options For COVID-19 Vaccine Available In India? 

Currently booster of both COVAXIN and COVISHEILD vaccines is being administered in India. One can take the same vaccine as booster that he or she had taken earlier in the first two shots.

Currently no data is available for booster doses of Sputnik being administered in India. Covovax and Corbevax don't qualify as booster doses in India.


What’s The Minimum Gap Between Second Dose And Booster Dose? 

The National Technical Advisory Group for Immunization has suggested 9 to 12 months gap between the second shot and the precautionary dose for healthcare and frontline workers and senior citizens with comorbidities and compromised immunity.


How Will The Booster Shots Be Given? 

The booster being administered to a person will be of the same vaccine as the first two doses that he/she has taken, the government has said. Those who got COVAXIN will get COVAXIN and those who got COVISHIELD will get COVISHIELD.
