Celiac Disease: Symptoms, Causes And Treatment!

Hello Readers!

Celiac Disease, also popular as celiac sprue, or gluten-sensitive enteropathy, refers to an auto-immune disease, in which the individual experiences an immune reaction to eating gluten.

A person with celiac disease eats something that contains gluten, then their body overreacts with the protein and resulting in the damage of their villi, the small finger-like projections, on the inner walls of the small intestine.

The main function of villi is to absorb the nutrients from the food particles, however, when it gets damaged, it doesn’t work properly. Eventually, this can lead to malnourishment, as well as loss of bone density, miscarriage, infertility, or even neurological diseases or certain cancers.

Well, this article let us everything about Celiac Disease like its symptoms, its causes, and its treatment!

What Is Gluten?

Gluten is a protein in wheat, barley, rye, and other grains. It’s what makes dough elastic and gives bread its chewy texture.

Here people must know that celiac disease is not similar to gluten intolerance or gluten sensitivity. People with gluten intolerance may show similar symptoms to that with celiac disease, however, they do not show an immune response or damage to the small intestine.

Symptoms Of Celiac Disease!

If you have celiac disease and by chance, you eat gluten then you may have symptoms like:

abdominal pain, anemia, bloating, bone or joint pain, constipation, diarrhea, gas, heartburn, itchy or blistery rash (doctors call this dermatitis herpetiformis), headaches or fatigue, mouth ulcers, nausea, weight loss, and others.

The symptoms of celiac disease in children are mostly related to intestinal problems that include:

Bloating or belly swelling, constipation, diarrhea, foul-smelling poop, upset stomach or vomiting, and weight loss.

Not everyone with celiac disease will have these symptoms. Some people don’t notice any problems, which can make diagnosis difficult.

Causes Of Celiac Disease!

Well, celiac disease is an autoimmune disease. The exact cause of this disease is still unknown. However, researchers say that it tends to run in families and might be linked to certain genes. Your genes combined with eating foods with gluten and other factors can contribute to celiac disease.

Several factors can trigger the disease like medical events such as a viral infection or surgery or emotional trauma or pregnancy. Experts say if one of your close family members has it, like a parent or sibling, you have a 1 in 10 chance of getting celiac disease.

When To See A Doctor?

Consult your doctor if you have diarrhea or digestive discomfort that lasts for more than two weeks. Consult your child's doctor if your child is pale, irritable, failing to grow, or has a potbelly and foul-smelling, bulky stools.

If celiac disease tends to run in your family or if someone from your family has the condition then do inform about this your doctor and ask him if you should be tested or not.
