Now the latest news about the COVID-19 pandemic is, that a new variant known as the COVID-19 XE variant has been detected. It is said to be more transmissible than the omicron variant! 

Also, some reports say that the first case of the new COVID-19 XE variant in India has been detected in a person in Mumbai, however, government officials have no formal confirmation of the same news.

In a tweet posted by PIB Maharashtra, it was mentioned, "Hours after report of detection of XE variant of Coronavirus in Mumbai, @MoHFW_INDIA has said present evidence does not suggest the presence of the new variant."

What Is COVID-19 XE Variant?

COVID-19 XE variant as per reports and WHO (World Health Organization) is a hybrid of two sublineages of Omicron - BA.1 and BA.2. The XE variant belongs to the Omicron variant until significant differences in transmission and disease characteristics, including severity, may be reported.


Where Was The Variant First Detected?

As per WHO reports the COVID-19 XE recombinant variant was first detected in the UK on 19th January 2022.


At Present Which Country Or Cities Have XE Variant Cases?

The XE variant has been detected in several countries till now, with over 600 cases. Apart from the UK, cases of the XE variant have also been detected in Thailand and New Zealand.

Reports also state that the first case of the XE variant has also been detected in a woman who is 50 yrs. old with no comorbidity. She arrived from South Africa on Feb 10 and tested negative on arrival. However, there has been no formal confirmation from the government official side.


How Much More Transmissible Is The New XE Variant From Other COVID Variants?

The XE variant appears to be more transmissible than previous strains of the coronavirus, the WHO said. “Early-day estimates indicate a community growth rate advantage of around 10 percent "as compared to BA.2," it added.


What Are The Symptoms Of The New XE Variant?

Some of the symptoms to watch out for include - fever, sore throat, scratchy throat, cough and cold, skin irritation and discoloration, gastrointestinal distress, etc.


Are Vaccines Effective Against the New COVID-19 XE Variant?

Covid-19 vaccines will reduce severe illness, hospitalizations, and death, even if they do not offer full protection against the new variant. Scientists are currently investigating how protected fully vaccinated people will be against the XE variant.


How To Stay Safe From XE Variant?

Well, the only way to protect yourself from this variant is self-protection that is keep following covid protocols rightly.

  • Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth.
  • Keep a physical distance of at least 1 meter from others.
  • Avoid poorly ventilated or crowded spaces at all costs.
  • Open windows to improve ventilation in indoor spaces.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap, use sanitizer when you can't wash your hands.
  • Get vaccinated- get both the jabs if you still have not received them. Get the booster shot if you are eligible for the same.
