What Cause Sleep Apnea And How Can It Be Treated?

Sleep Apnea is a serious sleep-related disorder that occurs when an individual’s breathing stops and starts while they slumber. People take it as a minor issue; however, it is not. If it goes ignored and untreated, it can cause other issues like loud snoring, daytime tiredness, or more serious problems like heart trouble or high blood pressure.

Sleep apnea is different from a normal snoring issue. Snoring is caused by nose or throat conditions, sleep style, or other reasons, however, sleep apnea-related snoring is caused when the tissues in the back of your throat vibrate.

This article lets us know every important detail about Sleep Apnea, like what are its symptoms, how it is caused, and what are the possible treatments!

Types Of Sleep Apnea….!

Sleep Apnea is broadly categorized into three different types explained below:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea: It is the most common form that occurs when throat muscles relax.
  • Central Sleep Apnea: It occurs when your brain doesn’t support or send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.
  • Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome: It occurs when someone has both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea.

General Symptoms Of Sleep Apnea….!

The general signs and symptoms of both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea are so similar that sometimes it is difficult to diagnose the actual type of sleep apnea in individuals.

Some of the common signs and symptoms include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Gasping for air during sleep
  • Awakening with a dry mouth
  • Morning headache
  • Difficulty staying asleep (insomnia)
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia)
  • Difficulty paying attention while awake
  • Irritability

Causes For Sleep Apnea….!

Well, different causes are responsible for different types of sleep apnea.

Experts say Obstructive Sleep Apnea is caused when the muscles in the back of your throat relax. These muscles support the soft palate, the tonsils, the sidewalls of the throat, and the tongue.

While Central Sleep Apnea is caused when your brain fails to transmit signals to your breathing muscles. This means that you make no effort to breathe for a short period. You might awaken with shortness of breath or have a difficult time getting to sleep or staying asleep.

How To Treat Sleep Apnea?

If your doctor diagnoses that you have Sleep Apnea, he will suggest you the medication to treat the issue based on the severity of the issue. For mild cases of Sleep Apnea, you may only need to make lifestyle changes. They may ask you to lose weight, stop smoking, or treat nasal allergies (if you have any).

However, if these don’t ease your symptoms or you have a moderate to severe case of Sleep Apnea then your doctor will suggest other treatments such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), wearing oral appliances, Adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV), or surgeries like Tissue removal, Tissue shrinkage, Jaw repositioning, Implants, Nerve stimulation or Tracheostomy.

If you have more questions or queries regarding Sleep Apnea, do consult an expert or a doctor for suggestions and tips.
