It is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company, that has its headquarters established in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The company was founded in the year 1983 by Dilip Sanghvi, in Vapi district of Gujarat. Currently Mr. Dilip Sanghvi is also serving post of the Managing Director of Sun Pharma.

Initially this company produced five products that were used to treat psychiatry ailments. Now it is popular for the manufacturing and selling of pharmaceutical formulations and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

Currently company’s major therapeutic (drug category) areas include cardiology, psychiatry, neurology, gastroenterology, and diabetology. The company also supplies the active pharmaceutical ingredients such as warfarin as blood diluters, carbamazepine as anti-convulsant, etodolac as NSAID, and clorazepate as well as anti-cancers, steroids, peptides, sex hormones, and controlled substances.

In the year 2014, Sun Pharma acquired another pharma company known as Ranbaxy and declared itself as the India’s top pharma company in terms of turnover. In the year 2019, it announced a net worth of US$390 million, with 32,000 employees working in it.

It also has collaboration with many foreign companies that proved to be the major milestones for the company’s development and success. The company is looking forward to build a global specialty pipeline with focused research and development (R&D) investments with its demerged arm SPARC. The principal focus areas for specialty portfolio include segments like dermatology, ophthalmology, and oncology.


Cipla Limited

The other popular name in the Indian Pharma Market is Cipla. It was founded by Khawaja Abdul Hameed in the year 1935 in the city of Mumbai. At that time, it was popular as ‘The Chemical, Industrial and Pharmaceutical Laboratories’.

Cipla is the leading manufacturer of antiretroviral drugs in the world and a therapy leader for anti-malarial with a market share of over 34% in India. The company also hold the record of manufacturing world’s first oral iron chelator with the name, Deferiprone in 1995.

It has a good sale of Active Pharmaceutical ingredients, to other manufacturers for the purpose of marketing. It also has a sale of pharmaceutical and personal care products, including Escitalopram (anti-depressant), Lamivudine, and Fluticasone propionate.

Aurobindo Pharma

The third on the list of top pharma companies of India is, Aurobindo Pharma Limited. It was founded by P.V. Ramprasad Reddy and K. Nityanand Reddy in 1986. Its headquarters is in HITEC CITY, Hyderabad, India.

Although it was founded in the year 1986 but it commenced it operation two years later in 1988-89 with a single unit manufacturing semi-synthetic penicillin (SSP) in Puducherry. In addition to be the market leader in Semi-Synthetic Penicillin, it has a presence in key therapeutic segments such as neurosciences, cardiovascular, anti-retroviral, anti-diabetics, gastroenterology, and anti-biotics, among others.

It has a total of two manufacturing units worldwide and with more than 22000 employees globally working in it. It’s net worth for the year 2018-19 was US$ 2.8 billion. In the year 2018 -19, it launched 50 new products that included 12 injectables.

The company now is planning to expand its product portfolio. For this soon company will be manufacturing high-value therapeutic products in segments of oncology, hormones biosimilars and novel drug delivery solutions like depot injections, inhalers, patches, and films.
