What Is Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis also referred to as TB in short is a highly contagious/ communicable disease that primarily affects the lungs of the infected person.

A bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis causes TB. A variety of TB strains exist, and some of these have become resistant to medication. TB bacteria are transmitted through infected droplets in the air. Once these droplets enter the air, anyone nearby can inhale them, and get infected too.

Symptoms Of Tuberculosis…..!

People who get infected with Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, mostly do not show any signs and symptoms. This condition is known as latent TB. TB can stay dormant for years before developing into an active TB disease.

While active tuberculosis has the listed below general symptoms:

  • unexplained fatigue
  • weakness
  • fever
  • chills
  • night sweats
  • appetite loss
  • weight loss

Tuberculosis infecting lungs include symptoms like:

  • cough lasting more than 3 weeks
  • coughing up blood or sputum (phlegm)
  • chest pain

Tuberculosis infecting other organs include symptoms like:

  • blood in urine and loss of kidney function if TB affects the kidneys
  • back pain and stiffness, muscle spasms, and spinal irregularity if TB affects the spine
  • nausea and vomiting, confusion, and loss of consciousness if TB spreads to the brain

Treatment For Tuberculosis……….!!

TB or tuberculosis is a bacterial disease, instead, different medications are advised instead of antibiotics. People diagnosed with active TB disease generally have to take a combination of medications for 6 to 9 months.

If you don’t complete the full treatment course the infection may likely come back. The most common combinations of medications for active TB disease include:

  • isoniazid
  • ethambutol (Myambutol)
  • pyrazinamide
  • rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane)
  • rifapentine (Printing)

Also, vaccinations are available for Tuberculosis. You must know that a vaccine doesn’t treat your tuberculosis, but it is given to prevent the infection in the future or to help you treat the disease in a much better way.

A TB vaccine, called the bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine, is mostly used in countries with a high prevalence of TB. This vaccine works better for children than for adults.
