Earaches: Symptoms, Causes, And Treatment!

Earache can occur in people of all age group. It may affect one or both ears, but most of the time it occurs in only one. It may be constant or come and go, and the pain may be dull, sharp, or burning.

If the pain is caused due to some kind of infection, in that case fever or loss of hearing may occur.


Symptoms of Earache! 

Earaches in adults may occur due to ear infection or injury and symptoms in adults include, ear pain, impaired hearing or fluid drainage from ear.

While symptoms of earache in children include the listed ones:

  • ear pain
  • muffled hearing or difficulty responding to sounds
  • fever
  • sense of fullness in the ear
  • difficulty sleeping
  • tugging or pulling at the ear
  • crying or acting irritable more than usual
  • headache
  • loss of appetite
  • loss of balance


Causes Of Earache! 

Experts say, injury, ear infection, irritation, or referred pain can be some of the causes for earache. Now you might be wondering, what is referred pain!

Referred pain is pain felt somewhere other than the infection or injured site. For example, pain that originates in the jaw or teeth may be felt in the ear.

Other common causes of earaches include:

  • change in pressure, such as when flying on a plane
  • earwax buildup
  • a foreign object in the ear
  • strep throat
  • sinus infection
  • shampoo or water trapped in the ear
  • use of cotton swabs in the ear


Treatment For Earaches At Home! 

There are several ways that you can opt to treat earaches at home. Some of the options are listed below, you may try these:

  • Apply a cold washcloth to the ear.
  • Avoid getting the ear wet.
  • Sit upright to help relieve ear pressure.
  • Use over-the-counter (OTC) ear drops.
  • Take OTC pain relievers.
  • Chew gum to help relieve pressure.
  • Feed an infant to help them relieve their pressure.


Medical Treatment For Earaches! 

In case if you have earache because of some kind of ear infection, your doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics or eardrops. In some cases, they’ll prescribe both.

Doctors also advice to complete your medication and stop taking medication oral antibiotics or eardrops. In some cases, they’ll prescribe both. Completing your medication will help the infection clear up completely.
